A YOUNG BOY FILMS A WORLD OF HIS OWN MAKING... Pablo Picasso once said, “All children are born artists. The problem is to remain an artist as we grow up.” As a father and director, I’ve seen parallelisms in child’s play and filmmaking. A director visualizes his film even before any scenes are shot. I stage scenes, build sets, block and direct characters, and frame shots as I watch and re-watch my films in my mind, crafting them through every stage of production in my imagination. Children at play act similarly: they imagine entire worlds, characters, and circumstances. When playing with toys, they manipulate their view to experience their toys as if they are real, holding up their toys close to their eyes or lying close to the ground as if framing their “shots.” In my own work, my 4-year-old son has inspired me. I always strive to emulate his attitude and the creative energy that is evident whenever he plays. In both filmmaking and in child’s play, creating and believing go hand in hand. Imagination and reality become one. This is the essence I wish to capture in my film, the essence of make.believe. // Directed by Armand Quimpo // Illustrations by Matthew Quimpo (4 yrs old)// All elements used in part or in whole have rights cleared for usage in the Sony My Dot Moment call for entries.
